Sounds in a Wood
this will be a performance for voices and acoustic instruments which will take place as part of the Sedbergh Music Festival on Sunday 15 June 2008 at 8pm. It will be in Rawthey Wood, a small wood on the banks of the River Rawthey opposite the confluence with the River Dee.
the performance will relate to the sound walks I have been doing in that I shall be speaking directly to the audience during the performance, encouraging them to listen in various ways at various points in the performance, using the music to potentiate the experiences I hope they will have.
tickets for the performance cost £4 each and are on sale from Sedbergh Tourist Information Centre now!
'Each Pebble Its Part'
this is an installation which uses photographs, field recordings and stones from the riverbank to recreate the course of the River Rawthey from its beginning at the top of Baugh Fell, north-east of Sedbergh, to its confluence with the River Lune west of the town. the river's course will be repeated on the gallery floor with stones; as you step on the stones, sounds will be played that were recorded where the stones were found.
the premiere of the installation will be at Ephemeral House, 12 Guldrey Terrace, Sedbergh LA10 5DT, an occasional art space in Sedbergh. the installation will be open from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June and is, again, part of the Sedbergh Music Festival. entry is free.
'Each Pebble Its Part' has been selected by the Sonic Arts Network for inclusion in its 2008 EXPO Festival in Brighton. the installation will be open during the day on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July, and when I have more details than that I will post them here. go to the EXPO Festival website for more details.

'Each Pebble Its Part' is an Ephemeral House commission, and it is funded by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England. we are grateful to Kent Valley Colour Printers, Drake Music Projects, the Sedbergh Dental Practice and Kirkby Lonsdale Motors for their support.
Sound Walks
I am doing two sound walks a month in Sedbergh through the spring and summer of 2008. the walks will last approximately an hour and cover a distance of around one mile. if people have mobility problems the route will take account of them. the idea is that we will walk slowly without speaking, just listening to the sounds around us. here and there I will suggest various listening exercises and games to people.
the walks are free, please just turn up on the day. the walks will start from Sedbergh Tourist Information Centre, 72 Main Street, Sedbergh LA10 5AD, except on June 29, when it will start either from the Tourist Information Centre or from Joss Lane Car Park, which it is next to. walks may go through muddy fields and across streams, please wear sturdy footwear. walks will go ahead whatever the weather, please dress appropriately. I have public liability insurance and first aid training.
the dates and times of the next few walks are:
Monday 9 June, 7pm
Sunday 29 June, 10am, as part of a day of 'Walks for Health and Interest' in Sedbergh.
Monday 14 July, 7pm
Saturday 26 July, 2pm
